SPRINGHILL DADS v MAPLES SPORT (Cup)
by Scoop & Jason

After the last game against Maples hopes are high that the Dads will be able to pull this one out of the bag. The League is beginning to look a bit dodgey, the Workers are hammering in the games. They might even get a goal average, if that happens they’ll be in the play-offs!
Don’t know what kind of a team is going to turn up several didn’t get back, no defence and Dave Smith rang up last thing, ‘can’t make it, my time to do the ironing!’ but we have got Robbie in goal. No lobs please lads!

SPRINGHILL DADS
Robbie Thorpe
Tim Hart - Martin Kings. - Simon - John Lynch
Jason Furness - Paul Hanvey - Jim Allen - Dave Hedges - John Frisby
John Elms - John Willis
Subs; Mark Shipsides, Matt McLaughlan, Alan Aburrow

From the kick off, some over enthusiastic defending by Tim saw the ball fly over the fence and into the road one of the lads retreived the ball but couldn’t get it over fence and had to get his Dad to chuck it over. Then the Dads got down to work, some pretty relentless pressure put Maples on the ropes. John Frisby got a shot off to be blocked for corner. Then, while the managers were arguing about the corner the dads played on and Jason was unlucky to see his header skim the bar.
From an isolated Maples foray into the Dads have, Robbie made an easy collect and then a quick clearance up to Jon Elms who was away, he beat two defenders but couldn’t beat the third. Then Tim was right through before - crunch - no free kick!!!!
Dads were really knocking it about, nice to watch - Maples could only make chances on the break. On one such break Martin missed an important interception and the ball ran on, Robbie was off his line to narrow the angle but was beaten by the shot. (0 - 1)
Paul was working hard in the middle and getting into the box. He was disappointed to see his header parried by the keeper, then Jim Allen had his shot blocked and John Willis just couldn’t reach the rebound. Jon Elms sprinted up the left, beat a defender but his shot was blocked and John Frisby’s shot was palmed behind. From the corner John Frisby had a brave header cleared off the line.
A ball over the top and a runner was through, everyone had to cover back like billie-oh but too late. The winger crossed into the path of the Maples forward to slot home easily. (0-2)
Unrelenting Dads pressure - two break-aways and two goals. More Dads pressure and Jason set it up for John Frisby to try a half-volley - just over. Jason tried a shot off the outside of his right foot - great save. The corner was cleared to John / Jason who just couldn’t beat defender. Another through ball to a runner but this time it was cut out by Simon.

HALF TIME DADS
0 - 2 MAPLES

Sportingly Paul made way for Mark to have a run out in the second half. Team talk was confident - the Dads were playing all the football, making all the chances and the game is still there to be won.
From the kick off Jim Allen was put away but his shot comfortably saved. Then Jon Elms made a sprint? down the left wing and crossed for Dave Hedges to shoot. The keeper was on his toes and made the save.
Mark had to come off for a few minutes early on in the second half for a session on his nebuliser - the poor dear, he does try! Matt covered.
A Maples winger won the ball on the left and crossed, the centre forward failed to make contact with the ball and it flashed passed the post.
Some great Dads approach play saw Jason feed Mark to break up the left of mid-field. Jason was forced to make one of his sliding tackles to win back the ball when the move nearly broke down - ouch! He then set the ball up perfectly for Jon Elms to cross into the box. Jason took the defender away, allowing DAVE HEDGES time to take a touch and fired into the top corner with Jason saying unkind things to the keeper about his wife.
The crowd would have gone bonkers if there’d been one. As it was Scoop was adjusting his shoe laces and the goal information was kindly relayed afterwards in the pub by Jason. (1 - 2)
Maples heads dropped a little - they were now expecting the Dads to get a few more goals. But, against the run of play, they broke away and Simon had to be alert to close the winger down and cleared behind. The corner was put harmlessly over.
Some foul play in the Maples end and while everyone was arguing about a free kick , Jon Elms took a short corner to John Frisby who shot wide.
Another Maples break-away put the Dads defence under a bit of pressure. When the cross came over Tim’s normally immaculate clearance was scooped up into the air and came straight back down to bounce off the cross bar for a corner. Almost a candidate for Own Goal of the Year. A particularly wicked curling corner was whipped over and there was the Maples (7 foot) centre forward at the far post being sheperded by Mark (baa!). He just stood there and noddded it in over Mark’s head. (1 - 3)
The game was up now and Matt was given a chance to shine for the last 20 minutes - John Willis making room. His fresh legs helped and was involved in most things - he even gave John Lynch his golden moment! A great chance for John in his new ball hungry, killer mode - the ball landed at his feet with his back to goal. It was like poetry, he flicked the ball up, spun and volley in one motion. It was worthy of a goal, unfortunately, it went for a throw-in.
Maples break Tim crudely chopped down the forward - unlike Tim? Sportingly, Maples let the nipper take the pen. Robbie was up for it. Nipper placed the ball on the spot and paced back five steps. Robbie was doing everything he could think of to psych him out. Looking for get eye contact, wobbly Bruce Grobelaar leg impressions, bribes, boarding over the goal-mouth. It was all to no avail as if to take the mick, nipper calmly fired in-off the right hand post with Robbie diving to the left!

Another triumph - overall they deserved it. A lot of skill from the fantastic free, such as the 1 - 2 - 1 - 2 - cross . . . goal move!

Letters to the Editor

Subject: Footie
Mal just to confirm my attendance on 16th. Spring is in the air and filled with a new found confidence in my own ability. I intend to stake a claim to a more central striking role, a hustling centre forward in the Alan Shearer mould. I believe that it is now time to reveal my goal scoring prowess. Failing that of course can I run around at the back like a headless chicken, as usual.

As I read the report of the recent match I was unsure that Scoop had watched the game I saw. Not one usually drawn into literary criticism I can not help feeling that Martin Kingsbury has been done a disservice. The game I saw had an ever-energetic Mr Kingsbury, in his usual graceful and athletic manner, going box to box in pursuit of the loose ball. His pin-point passing game and Le Tissier like vision was never more obvious than during this game. However, it is on neither of the above points I write. The paragraph that drew the sharpest intake of breath was your description of, what I consider to be, the goal of the season. Those luckily enough to have been at the Dell the previous day would have marvelled at Niall Quinn’s goal (offside maybe, but given). Quinn’s skill on the edge of the box, the control and accuracy was not only equalled but surpassed by the under-rated Kingsbury. Whilst I enjoy your reports I felt this miscarriage of justice should be brought to your attention. May I add that I have no connection with Martin Kingsbury although he did lend me his email address to send this.
I wish to remain anonymous.

Have you found out who scored the penalties in World Cup 96 against Argentina; apart from Shearer, Owen, Ince and Batty? Also, Who scored for Newcastle and saved a goal for Man U last season?
Luv,
Robbie Thorpe
